Just...Breathe Book 1 The Broken Series Excerpt

He nodded. “Partly,” he said. “You, in a way, were much like Jaden, lost and alone. We never set out to hurt anyone. We only wanted two people we care about very much to be happy.”

I cleared my throat. “This week away trip to the island, she was going to be there?” I asked.

John nodded again. “That was the plan. Lori had only thought of inviting Jaden for a birthday getaway,” he admitted. “I suggested bring you along.”

“That was the plan?” I inquired. “Is it not still?”

He shrugged. “After tonight, I really don’t know,” he whispered. “Maybe all of this was a bad idea. As much as I love Lori and care about Jaden, she might be too far gone.”

I poured another glass, downed it, and poured again. When I first touched her, first started to love her, she was still with me. She had not coiled up inside herself. I knew with time, I could help her, but is it a place I could travel?

It would mean sacrificing a part of myself, but in the end, if I succeeded, I would gain so much more. “The greatest happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved; loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves,” I mumbled a quote by Victor Hugo.

“You only mumble quotes when you’re in love Chase,” John chuckled. “Does that mean what I think it means?”

“I will follow her into her darkness in order to show her the light,” I said as I looked John in the eyes. “I don’t know if I would call it love, but I know I have never felt this way before. Get her to the island, no matter what you have to do. Do you understand?”

“Of course, Chase,” John said standing and following me to the door. “I take it you have a plan?”

I opened the door, stepped out, and turned back. “Yes,” I said. “I’m going to make her want me, need me. She will be forced to come out of herself in order to have me. When she does I will follow her into her darkness and show her the light on the other side.”

“Are you still coming to the island?” John asked, as I was halfway to my car.

Opening the door I answered, “No, I think if I did it would close her off more. I will be here waiting for her.” I slipped into the car. I must talk to Sandy.

As they rounded the corner into the living room, there they stood. Clad in black silk robes. The one who appeared to be the leader had skin that looked smooth, yet not. His eyes were large and black. His hair was slicked back and very dark, yet with a hint of red. His mouth, as he stood there smiling, was full of sharp pointed teeth. He looked like the images Steven had seen of demons or devils. He was not alone, there were three others standing next to him.

“Ah, Lindsey, I see you did as nicely as Nate had.” Elena purred. “We shall have an enjoyable time milking his cock. Won’t we Cateline?”

The Elder she addressed looked at Steven as if she was ready to eat. “Yes, I believe we will.” Cateline agreed.

Steven stood straighter. “It will be a cold day in hell before I allow the likes of you to touch me.” He growled.

Vlad laughed. “Interesting choice of words.” He said. “And so brave this one. Just as Nate’s mate, he has a sharp tongue.”

Elena interrupted, “A tongue I will have in my pussy before the Rebellion is finished.”

The tattoos that he showed drove her crazy. On one arm, he had a beautiful red rose. As her own tattoos would show, she too loved the red rose. She believed they held meaning, the meaning of love. For without love, life would not be worth living.

As she sat there, waiting for him to walk by she could feel her need, her desire for him growing, burning deep inside. She shook her head. ‘Wake up Melody.’ She thought. ‘What in the hell makes you think he will ever talk to you? On top of that, you are too damn shy to do anything yourself.’ She cursed herself. “Damn it to hell!” She muttered.

“Excuse me?” A mysterious male voice questioned.

Melody froze. She had been looking at the step for the last five minutes and didn’t notice someone had walked up to her. She slowly lifted her head to see the voice’s owner.

‘Oh my God, it’s him!’ She screamed silently. She wanted to panic, to run. She forced herself to respond. “May I help you?” She asked in a shaky voice.

The man smiled. “You sounded upset.” He said shrugging. “Is there anything I can help you with?”

Her heart was pounding and she could feel the blood drain from her face. “No…no, everything is fine.” She replied. “Thank you for asking.”

He still stood there, smiling. ‘What more could he want from me?’ She wondered.

He extended his hand. “I’m Nate.” He introduced himself. “You are?”

She tried to compose herself. She accepted his hand, my God, the fire that ignited between them. ‘If only it wasn’t one sided.’ She thought.

“I’m Melody.” She responded. “It’s nice to meet you.” Their eyes locked. She could almost believe she saw his darken with desire.

He held her hand a little longer than was necessary before he released her. Yet, he held her eyes. Try as she might, she could not look away.

Still smiling, he says, “It is nice to meet you too, Melody.”

She nodded. As she had no idea what to say next and she didn’t want to look like a fool. However, the silence was getting to her and she wanted, no needed, to hear his voice again.

“Are you on your way to work?” She inquired, all the while hoping she didn’t sound like a fool.

His smile brightened. “Yes,” He chuckled, “I’m on my way to work.” He ran his hand through his hair. “Are you headed off for work as well?”

She nodded. “Yes,” She said looking at her wristwatch, “and I must be going. It really was nice meeting you, Nate.” She loved the sound of his name on her lips.

He stepped a little closer and dropped his voice a notch, “You too, Melody.” He responded as he reached for her hand.

As Melody’s body heated at his touch, he brought her hand to his mouth. Having brushed his lips across her knuckles, he whispered, “Can I see you again?”

Her breath caught. ‘He wants to see me again?’ She thought as fear and panic set in.

“I… I don’t know.” She managed to say. “Why?”

He laughed. “I would like to get to know you better.” He answered and raised a brow. “Would you allow me the honor?”

She bit her lip. She couldn’t think straight when he looked at her like that, like he wanted her, all the while still holding onto her hand.

“I don’t know if that is a good idea.” She mumbled feeling unsure.

Again, he took a step closer. “I think it is a great idea.” He claimed as he massaged her hand with his thumb. “Let me see you tonight?”

She nodded. She couldn’t fight this kind of pull, this kind of heat. ‘What would it hurt to see where it would go?’ She asked herself. ‘Me, it would hurt me. No man has ever showed interest in her before, except. No, I won’t think about that.’

“Fine, tonight.” She heard herself agreeing and tried to smile.

He lifted her hand, once more, to his lips and kissed her. “Tonight,” He said, “I will pick you up here at eight, will that be ok?”

“Yes,” She answered, “That sounds fine.” She looked at her hand, still in his, then back to his face. “I really must go.”

He released her and stepped back. Once he had, she missed his warmth.

‘How will I ever pull this off?’ She screamed silently.

“Yes, and I must be on my way.” He said. “I will see you tonight, Melody.” He winked as he turned and walked away.

“What have I done?” Melody questioned aloud. ‘You’ve allowed the devil in, that’s what you have done.’ The voice in the back of her mind answered. ‘This man will eat you alive.’

“I hope so.” Melody said with a giggle as she made her way to work in the opposite direction. “God, I hope so.”

“Steve, did you see what Lucifer just did?” Julie asked close to hysterics.

“Yes, Julie I did.” Steve answered. “I know what you're thinking and you mustn't. You know what 'God' has said.”

Julie stood there biting her nails. Yes, she knew all too well, what 'God' had said. Yet she knew there was no way Thomas was going to win. “Yes, Steve, but I can't just stand here and allow Thomas to die.” Julie remarked. “Any of them for that matter.”

Steve shrugged. “It is your decision, Julie.” Steve said. “I too, don't want to see anything happen to any of them. But I'm already walking on thin ice with 'God'.”

Julie knew this as well. She would never think of asking Steve to join her. Julie took one last look at the scene unfolding before them then turned and left.

Steve knew not to ask questions. He knew exactly what Julie had planned. 'I hope she knows what the consequences will be.' Steve thought shaking his head. Yet at the same time, he knew she didn't care. She loved them and would do what was necessary to keep them safe, just as he had. 'Maybe, just maybe, 'God' will show her mercy as He had me.' Steve thought. Then he prayed.

“Thomas!” Emma screamed. Thomas tried to side step Lucifer when he lunged at them. In the process, he knocked Adam to the ground where he cracked his head pretty bad.

Thomas didn't have time to worry about that now. He must do what it takes to keep Emma safe. “Go to hell!” Thomas hissed at Lucifer.

Lucifer laughed. “I AM Hell.” He roared. “Give her to me.” Thomas turned to run. He didn't even get a chance to move. Julie was standing just in the distance. Moreover, she looked pissed.

Raymond led me down one long corridor after another until we finally reached a door. He looked back at me before we entered. As if silently telling me that nothing would happen to me as long as he was with me.

The room was brightly lit with machines all around. They had all kinds of wires hanging from them and a leather chair in the center. It had a head, arm, and leg restraint. The walls and floor were such a bright white it was blinding. It almost looked like a room you would find in a science fiction movie. ‘Creepy.’ I thought with a shudder.

“Ah, Raymond, Dr. Winder, please come in.” Dr. Anderson said.

“Call me Jay, Doctor.” I offered and extended my hand.

He smiled and accepted my gesture. “Only if you call me Joe.” I agreed with a smile. “Jay if you would please have a seat here.” Joe indicated the leather chair. “I will start by giving you an injection.”

I nodded and took a seat. “Once everything is done what will I need to do?” I asked.

Joe chuckled and said, “Lay back and relax. If it is going to work, you will know right away. Raymond and I will be right here if you need anything.” I nodded and closed my eyes as he laid the chair back and began to strap me in. I wanted to panic. However, I managed to hold myself in check with all the strength I could muster.

I heard him shuffling around and preparing my arm for the injection. “This may sting a bit, Jay, please hold still.” He said as he inserted the needle. I opened my eyes and turned my head in time to see a purplish liquid being inserted into my vein. 'I wonder what's in that liquid.' I thought as it burned its way through my arm and into my chest. I guess I must have tensed up as Joe said, “Jay, hold still and let it do the work.”

I tried to relax my body. The burning finally went away, but what was left, was a very cold feeling throughout my body. Suddenly I was shivering. “Joe,” I tried asking through clinched teeth. “Is the burning and coldness a normal reaction?”

When I did not get an immediate response, I opened my eyes to see him frowning at the machines. “Jay be still. The burning is normal but the coldness is not. Your vitals are increasing. I need you to relax before…”

He did not get a chance to finish because just then, my body went into uncontrollable spasms and I closed my eyes. I felt hands on me and I heard voices but I could not make out what they were saying. All I could think about was the pain and a real possibility I may die.

Just as quickly as it started, it was over. I lay there catching my breath. My body ached all over. Yet, I was no longer in pain or cold. It was oddly quiet. I no longer heard the machines. I did not even hear Raymond or Joe.

I slowly opened my eyes to see where Joe and Raymond were. I was met with darkness and emptiness. The only light was directly on me. The rest of the room was in total blackness. I was still strapped in the chair and alone. I called out, “Raymond? Joe? Hello?” Nothing. What was going on?

From somewhere out in the darkness I heard, “We told you not to be a hero. Yet, you didn’t listen.”

I looked around peering into the blackness to see where that voice had come from. “Who’s there? Where am I?” I demanded to know.

A laugh. “Isn’t it obvious, Jay?” The voice asked. “You’re home.”

‘I do not understand.’ I thought. “Home? What are you talking about? Who are you? Show yourself!” I ordered.

Another laugh. “All in due time, all in due time. You are quite lucky we intervened when we did or you would be dead. You see that solution the Dr. Andrews injected into your veins was the wrong syringe. He picked it up instead of the other one that was lying right beside it.” The voice said.

As I struggled to try to free myself I asked, “How do you know this?”

“We know everything, Jay. Have you not figured out that much yet? It also does not hurt to know that we still have someone inside helping us. It is useless to try to get out of the restraints. You’re not going anywhere, at least not until we are through with you.” The voice answered.

It was my turn to laugh. “You’re afraid of me? The all mighty and powerful Alien ‘God’ is so afraid of me you have to keep me tied up. Don’t make me laugh!” I wailed.

In a loud angry voice, the Alien thundered, “Do not mock us, Jay as you have no idea what we can do!”

Still laughing I said, “So, all mighty and powerful, tell me how you became ‘God’?”

There was silence for so long I thought ‘he’ had left. The voice finally answered, “Many years ago, our people were disappearing and we needed a way to repopulate. We searched the galaxy for life on another planet and found yours. We sent our people down to mate with humans and for a long time it worked very well. Until we had several of our kind ‘turn’ and started telling others of our existence. We could not have that so we removed the problems and started anew. Our people gave you everything. Yet, you have not shown the advancements we had hoped for and in return for our generosity you have turned our kind against us and now you must pay.”

“So it is our fault? You say it is because of you, we are here and we have what we have. Yet, it is our fault? That hardly makes any sense. It would seem to me that you are the ones to blame. If what you say is true, your people are the ones who stood in our way. Your people taught us to be who we are today, not humans. How dare you blame us?” I countered.

“Believe me, everything I tell you is the truth.” The voice rang out.

I chuckled. “One of the many things life has taught me is when someone says ‘believe me’ they are lying. Never such truer words, than the words spoken by the ‘Devil’. You are no ‘God’.” I said. “What do you need me for?”

“You, Jay, will be our new start. Our way to preserve our race. With your help, we will begin again by planting a new seed. By creating a new world, we will destroy all the evil on Earth and fill it with the good, our good, once again.” The voice explained.

“You do not deny it when I call you the ‘Devil’?” I waited for a response but when it was clear there would not be one I continued, “Your good? What you call evil on Earth is exactly what your people are doing. Yes, my people have gotten out of control but you are no better than they are. You kill what you do not like or understand. You talk of evil and good, what a joke. You call yourselves ‘God’. I am ashamed to know that I have your blood running through my veins. You make me sick!” I roared. “What makes you so much better than us?” I demanded to know.

“We exceed your knowledge level. We have mastered space travel. We have evolved in order to live in peace on our planet. We also have the ability to control humans. Isn’t that enough?” The voice proudly said.

“Really? That right there shows how little you really do know. If you can truly control humans we would not be having this talk, now would we? Humans are just as advanced as your kind. Yet, you are blinded by your own self claimed

greatness to see it.” I smirked. “Show yourselves, if you’re so great. Let me see who is behind such a great, powerful, and good voice.” I demanded. “Or are you too afraid that I will see right through you. That I will know the truth? Hear me, I will not, will not help you. You will have to kill me. Know this I will not go down without a fight!” As my body went weightless, I had images flash before my eyes. What I saw will haunt me for all my days.

**************************************

The Earth, in 2044, was not the same. The Governments, worldwide, have taken full control, it all started in 2014 with the ban on guns and smoking, and from there it spread. It spread like a virus, a disease that crippled the Earth. The Earth was now dark and filled with poverty and despair. A world filled with pollution, unthinkable crimes, and a plague. A plague called Government. The Earth looks different now than the memories I have and the pictures my parents showed me. What was once a beautiful world, alive with nature is now nothing more than a rotting apple.

Once the government, worldwide, allowed ‘big businesses’ more control, more favors, our worlds resources suffered. People suffered. With the advancements in technologies jobs suffered. With the use of robots, less and less humans were needed in the factories. Homes and families suffered the most. While some just lost jobs and had to rely on government support, others broke up, fell apart. In some cases, children were taken from their homes and placed with strangers. Then there are the families, the people, who couldn’t take the stress of what was going on around them in the world and ended their lives or wound up being placed in one of many government ran insane asylums.

The government now has control over most everything and when they don’t get what they want the person responsible would find themselves a victim of a senseless death. All homes were equipped with cameras so the government could see what a person was doing and when. Many innocent people have lost their lives because of this. My grandparents knew this day would come, but still prayed it wouldn’t. Orwell’s predictions have come to pass.

We have always believed that there may be more out there, out beyond our galaxy. The signs have always been there, right in front of our faces. It has been three months since the massive sightings started all over the world and I, Dr. Jay Winder, know what it means, destruction, death, and the end to the human race as we know it. That is why I am sitting here ready to present my “Lab Rat” Theory to Congress. Do I believe it will make a difference? God I hope so!

“Dr. Winder,” the Speaker of the House began, “It has been brought to our attention that you may have some information regarding the sightings that are being reported.”

“Yes Sir, I believe I do. As you know we have seen a 200% increase in UFO sightings in the last three months compared to the last century. I believe it has something to do with my “Lab Rat” theory.”

“Would you care to elaborate Dr. Winder?” The Speaker asked.

I thought for a moment, “Mr. Speaker, members of Congress, I have been working on this theory for the past 15 years and I have come to the conclusion that we, the human race, are merely rats in a science experiment and the ‘GOD’ we pray to does not exist. What does exist instead, are those that created us; extraterrestrial beings. The time has come, in their view, to wipe out the human race and start anew because the human race did not complete the maze. In other words we did not reach the cheese at the end of the maze.” I stated. I stood there looking into the disbelieving faces of Congress. At that point the Speaker of the House along with all member of Congress burst into uncontrollable mocking laughter.

When the laughter died down the Speaker asked, “Dr. Winder you don’t honestly expect us to believe such sensationalist ramblings, do you? Come on! The Earth is 4.5400030 billion years old and humans have been on Earth for only 200,030 years. The Bible itself has been in existence for 1,719 years…”

I interrupted, “My reports indicate at least ten times that.”

He went on as if I hadn’t spoken. “And for the last 1,719 years people have believed in it, prayed with it, and preached it. You dare to ask us, in a matter of a few minutes, to ignore everything we have believed and relied on and adopt this new theory as if it were fact? Where is your proof, your evidence Dr. Winder? This, and you, sir, are absolutely insane!”

My proof? My evidence? Were these people crazy! “Mr. Speaker, members of Congress, the proof and evidence is all around us and has been for centuries. Just read the old legends and stories, some of which are found in the Bible. Look at everything that has been discovered over the last 100 + years. It is all right there in front of you and in my report. We must act now! The human race is in jeopardy sir. With all the technological advancements our military has made we might just stand a chance. If nothing else we must go down fighting, fighting for the right to live!” Again, I was met with laughter. What is wrong with these people! We are faced with the very real chance of extinction and yet they mock me, why?

When the House Speaker composed himself he said, “Dr. Winder I believe I speak for the whole House and the President when I say you, my good man, are a lunatic. Your request for a meeting with the President, or even the Vice President, for that matter is denied.” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Then he continued, “Furthermore, if you leave here immediately and quietly we won’t recommend that you be taken in for a mental evaluation and have you committed. Thank you for your time sir, good day.” With that, everyone started laughing again. I walked out with my head down in embarrassment but at the same time angry that they hadn’t taken me seriously. Human life didn’t mean a damn thing to them and because of them we were all going to die!

I am not mad. There will come a day, very soon, they will be calling me. They will be begging for my help. I have never claimed to have all the answers. What one man does? However, it would seem, I am the only one who has taken the time to try to understand what is truly going on around us. No, that’s not true. There is one other like me. Let’s just hope that the day they finally do call upon me it won’t be too late. I am not mad!
